I love your techniques! I have a year old lab that gets very aggressive when we dance or wrestle. I think he just wants to protect the kids and stop the ‘chaos’ but he bites REALLY hard! Broken the skin??? YOU BET! we all have scars from the little monster! he is very smart…Sit..Shake..Down…Rollover…Sit up pretty…Stay and play dead. I dont understand why I can not teach him not to bite. I just dont know how I am sure…any ideas? Thanks for your time!

I tried this with my dog. He never jumped until I caught my uncle and cousins telling my dog to “hug” them. I would grab his paws and instead of pulling back he wants to turn and his arms get twisted (doesn’t look to comfortable and I was afraid he was going to break something). Or he would attempt to bite my hands, he’s not a bitter, rather a super friendly dog and doesn’t even get aggressive with other aggressive dogs hes met. Any suggestions?

@Xy1on : I agree with JiveDadson on not repeating the command. In addition, why not put her on a leash? Train her firstly to walk on a leash then to run at your side on the leash. Keep speaking to her, calling her by name to distract her and treat her when she responds. With time, she’ll know what you expect of her and may not need the leash.

My dog ghostie jumps so high into the air, that everyone is amazed and gives him praise and smiles and he loves it. He doesn’t jump ON you… just really close. My other dog flips onto his back when I appraoch him and if i dont pet his belly, he boings into the air and jumps all over me.

@Gleam16 Afraid not, dogs really can’t understand “ok for this person, but not for these ones” your best approach would be to not let her jump up unless invited, or not jump up at all, any you kneel down to praise her.

This doesn’t work with all dogs.

I really liked this video, but my dog is a 2 lb Yorkie. I got a visual of going to the floor in order to grab his paws. Will this work for a pup his size? It sounds comical to grab his paws being so tiny. Or do you have an alternative approach to this? I’d love to hear it. Thank you

I live in a rural area and in front of my house is a truck stop and behind my house is a reservoir so wild animals are abundant i have 3 cats and my family needs a dog we are very active like to hike, fish, camp. We are looking for a dog that is big strong and is protective because of the animals and drunk and unstable people that like to wander near our home from the truck stop i worry for my little sister and father. Any suggestions for a good dog in this enviroment?

nice point, I’m sure this will work.
I like the change in command.
Posted by JiveDadson on 21.05.10 at 6:03 pm
Xy1on: P.s. Never repeat a command. If it doesn’t work the first time, find a way to make it work.
Posted by JiveDadson on 21.05.10 at 6:03 pm
Xy1on: You are doing so many things wrong. Do you never use her name except when you mean, “Come here?” If not, how is the dog supposed to know when her name means “Come here” and when it means something else? And why should she come anyway? I’m new at this, but my dogs and I have come a long way in a short time. I found dogforums (dott) com to be a real good resource.
